Why "Super September" Is Becoming Europe's Favorite Month to Travel

Ask anyone who travels Europe often when they go, and an increasing number will say September. Not as a compromise — as a first choice. The nickname doing the rounds is "Super September", and the reasoning holds up: land temperatures settle into the 24-28°C range while the Mediterranean is at its warmest point of the entire year, because the sea takes all summer to heat up and lags roughly two months behind the air.

The sea temperature thing is the whole argument

In June the air is hot and the water is still cold. In September it flips. You get comfortable sightseeing weather during the day and genuinely warm swimming — often 25-26°C in the Aegean and Adriatic. It is the only month where both are true at once.

Where September works best

• Greek islands — Naxos, Milos, Crete. Warm sea, ferries still running full schedules, half the August crowd.
• Puglia and Sicily — harvest season, and the heat finally drops to something walkable.
• Croatia''s Dalmatian coast — Split and Hvar without the cruise-ship density.
• Algarve, Portugal — arguably the most reliable September weather in Europe.
• Andalusia — Seville and Granada are genuinely miserable in August and lovely in late September.

The price side

The other half of the appeal is money. Two things to check before you book

Seasonal closures. Smaller island businesses and some beach clubs start winding down from late September. Mid-month is the safe zone; the last week is a gamble on very small islands.
