The "Book Right After School Starts" Trick That Can Cut Your Trip Cost by 30%

European flight and hotel prices reportedly drop 20-30% the moment schools go back. Here is how to actually time it.

There is a pricing cliff in European travel and it is not subtle. The week schools resume in early September, hotel and flight prices reportedly fall by 20-30% โ€” same rooms, same routes, same weather, roughly a third less money. Family demand simply evaporates overnight and the market adjusts within days.

Why the drop is so sharp

Summer pricing in Europe is propped up almost entirely by families who have no choice about when they travel. When term starts, that demand does not taper โ€” it stops. Hotels sitting on unsold September inventory discount fast, and airlines drop fares on leisure routes to keep load factors up.

How to actually use it

Travel in the window, not just book in it. The discount is on September and early October departure dates. Booking in September for a December trip does nothing.

Target the second week of September onwards. The first few days after term starts are still transitional. From roughly the 8th-10th, pricing has fully reset.

Watch the route for a week before buying. The drop is not instant everywhere. Pull up your dates, check them once a day for five or six days, and buy when the curve flattens. Skytrippa''s flight search makes that comparison quick because you are seeing the same route across dates rather than one fare at a time.

Book flights first, hotels second. Flight prices firm up as departure approaches; hotel prices in shoulder season often keep drifting down. Lock the expensive, volatile thing early.

Where the saving is biggest

Coastal and family-heavy destinations see the steepest falls: the Spanish costas, the Greek islands, the Italian Adriatic, the Algarve. Capital cities like Paris, London and Amsterdam drop less, because business travel picks up in September and cushions the fall.

The catch, and why it barely matters

Some beach resorts and seasonal restaurants start closing from late September, and a handful of ferry routes reduce frequency. Check that your specific island or resort town is still fully operating for your dates. Beyond that, you are getting late-summer weather at spring prices โ€” and the sea is warmer in September than in June, which is the part almost nobody accounts for. More on that in our Super September guide.

Percentages here are reported averages as of this period and vary by route and destination.
