Why the drop is so sharp

Summer pricing in Europe is propped up almost entirely by families who have no choice about when they travel. When term starts, that demand does not taper — it stops. Hotels sitting on unsold September inventory discount fast, and airlines drop fares on leisure routes to keep load factors up.

How to actually use it

Travel in the window, not just book in it. The discount is on September and early October departure dates. Booking in September for a December trip does nothing.

Target the second week of September onwards. The first few days after term starts are still transitional. From roughly the 8th-10th, pricing has fully reset.

Watch the route for a week before buying. The drop is not instant everywhere. Pull up your dates, check them once a day for five or six days, and buy when the curve flattens.
