TSA May Let PreCheck Flyers Carry Full Water Bottles

TSA May Let PreCheck Flyers Carry Full Water Bottles

The TSA is considering letting PreCheck passengers bring sealed full water bottles through security at airports with advanced CT scanners. No date, no airport list — here is what Indian travellers should know.

The TSA is looking at relaxing one small, deeply annoying rule: the ban on carrying a full water bottle through security. Under what is being considered, PreCheck passengers at airports with advanced CT scanners could keep a full bottle in their bag instead of emptying it at the bin.

Before anyone repacks: this is under consideration, not active policy. No rollout date has been confirmed, and no list of participating airports has been published. Until that happens, the 100ml rule applies exactly as it always has.

What is on the table, precisely

  • Water only. The idea covers water bottles, not liquids generally. Your shampoo, sauces and duty-free still follow the existing limits.
  • PreCheck only. It is being framed as a PreCheck benefit, not a change for every passenger lane.
  • CT-scanner airports only. The newer 3D scanners can resolve the contents of a bottle well enough that the blanket ban becomes less necessary.

Why this matters if you are flying from India to the US

Most Indian travellers on US routes are not in PreCheck. It is open to US citizens, nationals and lawful permanent residents, so for a visitor on a B1/B2 or an H-1B holder without Global Entry, this change would not apply on day one. If you do hold Global Entry, PreCheck comes bundled with it, and that is the realistic path for Indian frequent flyers.

Where it would land for you is the connection. If you clear customs at a US gateway and re-screen for a domestic leg — the classic Delhi to Newark to Chicago pattern — a relaxed water rule saves a bin stop at the most tiring point of the journey. Small, but it is exactly where people are most frazzled.

What we would do today

Nothing differently. Empty the bottle before the checkpoint, refill at a fountain airside, and keep liquids under 100ml in the clear bag. Assume the current rule until the TSA publishes a start date and the airport list.

And if the US is on your plan, check the entry requirement for the United States before you book — the visa interview timeline is the constraint that actually decides your travel dates, not the security queue. If your appointment needs a flight itinerary, Reserve your visa flight reservation here.

We watch US fares out of Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru on Skytrippa — the one-stop European and Gulf routings are often several hundred dollars apart for the same day.
