How to Travel Internationally for Under $500

Under-$500 international trips aren't a lie. They just require picking the right destination, dates, and route.

"Travel internationally for under $500" sounds like clickbait. It's not — I've done it four times, and so have plenty of people I know. But it's not for every destination, and not with every travel style. It works when you match the right destination to the right dates and route. Here's the honest playbook.

The math to hit under $500

$500 is roughly ₹42,000. For 5–7 days, you need to hit approximately:

  • Flights: ₹18,000–22,000
  • Accommodation: ₹8,000–10,000 (₹1,500–1,700/night)
  • Food: ₹5,000–7,000 (₹800–1,000/day)
  • Transport + activities: ₹5,000–7,000

Every one of these is doable — just not simultaneously in Paris in July. Destination and timing do 90% of the work.

Where it works (from India)

  1. Sri Lanka: Flights ~₹12,000, guesthouses ₹1,200/night, meals under ₹500/day. 7 days easily under $500 including a train ride to Ella and a beach stop in Mirissa.
  2. Nepal: Flights ~₹10,000–14,000, guesthouses in Kathmandu and Pokhara ₹800–1,500/night. Trekking permit + Poon Hill trek adds maybe ₹5,000. Total: often under $400.
  3. Thailand (off-peak): Flights to Bangkok in May or September can drop to ₹14,000–16,000 return. Guesthouses ₹1,500/night. Street food ₹200 a meal. 5 days under $500 including a beach day trip.
  4. Vietnam: Flights ~₹18,000–20,000 to Ho Chi Minh. Hostels ₹800–1,200. Food incredibly cheap. E-visa easy. 5–6 days under $500.
  5. Malaysia: Flights to KL ~₹14,000 with AirAsia. Visa-free. Hostels or cheap hotels ₹1,500. 4–5 days under $500 including a Batu Caves day + Melaka day trip.
  6. Georgia (shoulder season): Flights ~₹22,000, guesthouses in Tbilisi ₹1,800/night, food ₹700/day. Tight but doable in 5 days.

The flight lever is the biggest

Your entire budget lives or dies on flight price. A ₹22,000 flight vs a ₹32,000 flight for the exact same seat can be the difference between $500 and $650. I compare on Skytrippa every single time because these routes have big spreads across carriers, and the difference is basically 2–3 nights of accommodation.

The date lever is the second biggest

Shift your dates ±5 days and prices can move 30%+. Tuesday–Tuesday almost always beats Friday–Sunday. Avoid Indian holiday windows (Diwali, Christmas week, summer school break) unless you specifically want to overpay.

Where to sleep for under ₹1,500 without being miserable

  • Hostels — private rooms in most Southeast Asian hostels are ₹1,200–1,800 and often better than budget hotels.
  • Guesthouses over hotels — family-run, cleaner, cheaper, better food advice.
  • Hostelworld and Agoda for the region — filter by review score >8.0, sort by price, check the recent reviews for cleanliness comments.
  • Book the first 2 nights, then arrange the rest on the ground — often 20–30% cheaper than online rates.

Food strategy

Eat where locals eat. Every dollar you spend at a "backpacker cafe" with English menus is a dollar you didn't need to spend. A ₹80 pad thai from a street cart is often better than a ₹350 pad thai at a Western-facing restaurant. Learn to say the local word for "spicy" and "vegetarian" and you're set.

What you have to accept

  • You're not staying at 4-star hotels. Ever.
  • You're taking local buses, trains, and shared vans instead of taxis.
  • You're not doing every paid tourist attraction — pick 2–3 you actually care about.
  • You're carrying only carry-on to skip checked baggage fees.
  • You're booking non-refundable fares to get the lowest price.

If any of these are dealbreakers, you're not doing a $500 trip. That's fine — just choose your constraint honestly.

Where it doesn't work

Don't try under $500 in: Europe (except off-season Balkans), Japan, Korea, US, Australia, most of Africa (flight cost alone kills it). Save those for the "$1,200–2,000" tier.

Bottom line

Sub-$500 international travel from India is real — Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, occasionally Georgia. The recipe is always the same: cheap flight on the right dates, guesthouses over hotels, local food, minimal paid activities, carry-on only. Do that math, pick your destination, and you have a real international trip for less than a weekend in Goa.
