Luxury Train Hopping: The Slow Travel Trend Taking Over

Multi-week rail routes across borders are pulling travelers who can afford to fly and choose not to. Here is why, and who it actually suits.

The strangest travel shift of the last couple of years: people with the budget to fly business class are booking three-week train journeys instead. Not backpacker rail passes โ€” proper sleeper services with cabins, dining cars and a route that crosses four or five countries slowly.

Why anyone would choose 18 hours over 2

Ask people who have done it and you get the same three answers. The journey is the holiday, not the gap before it. There is no airport โ€” no 3am alarm, no security queue, no gate change. And the scenery between cities turns out to be the part of a country most travellers never see, bcoz they fly straight over it.

What it actually costs

Wide range, and it matters which end you are looking at. Flagship luxury services โ€” the ones with private cabins, fixed dining and a set multi-day itinerary โ€” start around $1,000 per person per night and go up steeply. Ordinary first-class sleepers on European or Japanese networks are a completely different world: often $150โ€“$400 a night including the bed, which is competitive with a hotel plus a flight.

Most people doing this well are mixing the two. One or two legs on a showpiece train, the rest on normal intercity services, stopping for two or three nights in each city.

Who it suits โ€” and who it does not

It suits people with time and a tolerance for slow mornings. It does not suit tight two-week trips with a fixed return date, and it does not suit anyone travelling with small kids who need to burn energy. Border crossings also add friction that flying hides: visas get checked on board, sometimes at odd hours.

The practical way to plan one

Book the two long-haul flights first โ€” the one into your start city and the one out of your end city โ€” bcoz open-jaw tickets are the whole trick here and they price very differently depending on the pair. We compare those on Skytrippa before touching the rail bookings. Then build the rail legs outward from those two fixed dates.

One warning from experience: leave a spare night before your outbound flight. Trains are reliable until the one time they are not, and you do not want a missed international connection at the end of a very expensive holiday.
