A First-Timer's Guide to Bali: What No One Tells You

Everyone and their cousin has been to Bali. And yet almost every first-timer I know came back saying "I wish someone had told me before I went." So here's the honest version — the stuff the Instagram reels and travel guides skip. This is what I'd tell my sister if she was going for the first time next month.

Don't stay in Kuta

I mean it. Kuta is the default recommendation because it's cheap and near the airport, and it will ruin your first impression of Bali. It's crowded, aggressive, full of touts, and the beach is not what you came for. Stay in Canggu if you want beach + cafe scene, Ubud if you want jungle + culture, or Uluwatu if you want dramatic clifftop beaches. Spend one night max in the south if your flight lands late.

The scooter thing is real — and dangerous

Everyone rents a scooter. Almost no one has an international driving permit. Bali police are checking now, especially in Canggu and Ubud, and the "fine" is negotiable in cash — usually 200,000–500,000 IDR. Beyond the police issue, scooter accidents are Bali's most common tourist injury by a huge margin. If you've never ridden one, don't learn on Bali's roads. Use Gojek or Grab, or hire a driver for ~₹1,800 a day.

The new tourist tax

As of 2024 and still in effect for 2026, Indonesia charges international visitors to Bali a 150,000 IDR (about ₹800) tourist levy. You can pay it in advance online via the "Love Bali" app or portal, or at the airport. Don't skip it — some hotels and attractions now check.

Budget reality check

Bali is not the ₹1,500-a-day country it was in 2018. Realistic 2026 budgets per person:

• Backpacker: ₹2,500–3,500/day (hostels, warungs, scooter)
• Comfortable: ₹5,000–7,500/day (nice guesthouses, mix of Western and local food, drivers)
• Semi-luxury: ₹10,000+/day (private villas, beach clubs, spa days)

The flight is often the biggest single cost — Delhi/Mumbai to Denpasar prices swing hard depending on when you book. I always compare on Skytrippa before committing. On the same dates last month I saw a ₹6,200 spread between the cheapest and most obvious option.

Visa on arrival — but do the e-VOA

Indians get visa-on-arrival in Bali (500,000 IDR, about ₹2,700). But the airport VOA queue can eat 90 minutes on a bad day. Pay the same fee online in advance for the e-VOA and skip most of the queue. Takes 10 minutes and you keep it on your phone.

Areas at a glance

• Canggu: Best base for most first-timers. Cafes, surf, sunset bars, easy scooter access to Ubud.
• Ubud: Rice terraces, temples, yoga, jungle. Base yourself here for 3–4 nights minimum.
• Uluwatu: Cliffs, dramatic beaches, higher-end vibe. Great for 2–3 nights.
• Nusa Penida (day trip or overnight): The postcard cliffs everyone photographs. Overnight is worth it if you have the time.
• Gili Islands: Skip on a first trip unless you have 10+ days. It's a full extra journey.

What to actually book ahead

• Flights (obvious)
• First 2 nights of accommodation (so you land relaxed)
• One good driver for a day trip (Ubud → waterfalls → rice terraces circuit)
• Uluwatu Kecak fire dance at sunset if you're near there — it books out

Everything else you can arrange on the ground for cheaper than online.

The stuff nobody warns you about

• The dogs. Bali has a lot of street dogs. Most are friendly but rabies is a real thing — don't pet.
• The traffic. Ubud to Canggu on a map is 40 minutes. In reality, 90.
• The ATM skimming. Only use ATMs attached to actual banks, not standalone booths.
• The cash-only spots. Warungs, small massage places, and beach vendors are almost all cash. Carry small notes.

Bottom line

Bali is still worth it. The hype is real, the food is incredible, the sunsets deserve their reputation. Just come in with realistic expectations: it's not the cheap paradise of 2015, Kuta will disappoint you, and you'll probably fall in love with Ubud more than you expect. Skip the mistakes above and you'll have the trip everyone else is trying to have.
