Dry Tourism: Why Alcohol-Free Holidays Are Having a Moment
Sober cruises, mocktail bars and alcohol-free retreats are filling up. What is driving it, and what an alcohol-free trip actually looks like.
Resort bars are quietly rewriting their menus. Not bcoz anyone banned anything โ bcoz a decent chunk of guests, mostly under 35, are ordering something else. Alcohol-free travel stopped being a niche for people in recovery and became a mainstream preference.
What is actually driving it
Three overlapping reasons. Sleep and recovery culture โ people track their sleep now and alcohol is obviously terrible for it. Cost โ drinks are the single easiest line to cut on a holiday budget, and cutting it can save more than switching hotels. And honestly, the mornings: if you paid to be somewhere for six days, losing two of them to hangovers is a bad trade.
What the options actually look like
- Sober cruises. Chartered sailings with no bar service, replaced with workshops, live music and shore excursions. They sell out earlier than you would expect.
- Wellness retreats. Usually alcohol-free by default. Yoga, hiking, cold water, early nights. Thailand, Portugal and Bali have the deepest supply.
- Mocktail-forward resorts. Normal hotels that took the zero-proof menu seriously instead of offering orange juice and calling it a day.
- Regular trips, quietly dry. The most common version. No special booking, just a different bar order.
What it saves
Rough numbers from our own trips: skipping drinks knocked roughly 15โ20% off total spend in Thailand and closer to 30% in Western Europe, where a couple of rounds can cost more than dinner. That is often the difference between economy and premium economy on the flight there.
How to book one without overpaying
Watch out for all-inclusive packages โ you are paying for a drinks package you will not touch. Room-only or breakfast-only rates almost always come out cheaper for a dry trip. We price the stay and the flight separately for exactly that reason, and compare the flight side on Skytrippa first so the total is clear before committing to any package deal.
It is not a moral thing for most people booking these. It is just a better holiday for the way they want to travel now, and Skytrippa sees more of these searches every season.
