Everyone Said Don't Book Flights in December — We Did It Anyway

We booked international flights in the "worst" month and still cut ₹10,000 off the price. Here's what actually happened.

Every travel forum, every "expert" blog, every uncle who's been to two countries — they all say the same thing: never book international flights in December. Prices spike, everything's expensive, wait for January instead. Bcoz we heard this so many times before our Thailand trip that we almost believed it. We didn't wait. Here's what actually happened.

The myth vs. what we found

Our Nagpur → Bangalore → Bangkok round trip was originally showing ₹32,000 (~$385 / ฿13,500) per person. Not the doomsday price everyone warned us about, but not cheap either. Instead of panicking and waiting for a "better month," we just kept comparing across platforms daily for about a week. We found a discount that brought it down to ₹22,000 (~$255 / ฿9,300) — almost ₹10,000 off, in December, the supposedly "worst" month to book.

What we think actually happened

December is expensive on average because of holiday demand — that part's true. But "average" doesn't mean "every flight, every route, every day." Prices still move based on seat tiers and specific route demand, not a blanket December tax. If you're flexible on exact dates by even a day or two, and you're comparing multiple sites instead of booking the first price you see, December stops being scary.

What we'd actually tell someone booking

  • Don't rule out a month just because of a general rule you read somewhere
  • Compare across platforms — this is the single biggest lever, more than timing
  • Be willing to shift your date by 1-2 days if the site shows a price jump on a specific day
  • Set a target budget and book once you hit it, instead of endlessly waiting for a mythical "perfect price"

Bcoz waiting for the "right time" cost us nothing — but it could've cost us the trip if we'd kept delaying based on a rule that didn't actually hold up.
