Air India Named Best Airline in India at the Skytrax 2026 Awards

Air India took Best Airline in India and Best Airline Staff in India and South Asia at the 2026 World Airline Awards in London, plus a 4-Star certification for Business and Economy.
At the 2026 World Airline Awards in London on September 18, Air India was named Best Airline in India and Best Airline Staff in India and South Asia, and picked up a Skytrax 4-Star certification covering its Business and Economy cabins.
One clarification first, bcoz the headlines blurred it: this is the Best Airline in India category, a regional award. It is not the global World Best Airline title, which went to Singapore Airlines.
What the awards actually measure
The World Airline Awards are based on a large passenger survey covering booking, boarding, seat comfort, catering, crew service and entertainment. The Star rating is a separate thing — an audited product classification. A 4-Star certification for Business and Economy says the hard and soft product across those cabins met a defined standard, not that every single flight will feel identical.

Why it is a bigger story than a trophy
Air India spent years as the airline people flew because of the schedule, not the experience. The post-privatisation retrofit programme — new cabins on the legacy widebodies, new aircraft arriving, retrained crew — has been visible but uneven, and passengers have been vocal about the gap between the new jets and the old ones.
A staff award is the interesting one here. Cabins can be bought; service culture cannot be retrofitted on a delivery schedule. Winning the regional staff category suggests the training investment is showing up in how flights actually feel.
What it means when you book
- Check the aircraft, not just the airline. On long-haul, a retrofitted widebody and an un-retrofitted one are genuinely different products on the same route and the same fare.
- Nonstop premium is the real advantage. Delhi and Mumbai nonstops to London, New York and San Francisco save a connection that Gulf carriers cannot.
- Compare anyway. An award does not make a fare competitive on any given date.
We run the comparison on Skytrippa — same route, same day, nonstop versus one-stop — before deciding whether the nonstop premium is worth it.
